The Xfiltration joint allows water to move between the CMP storage system and the surrounding stone backfill. In a typical detention application, the restricted outlet controls the overall discharge rate and allows water levels in the pipe and stone backfill to generally equalize as the system fills.

The rate of water movement through the joint can vary with hydraulic conditions, including the inflow rate, water level in the system, and available storage in the surrounding stone.

The stone backfill itself is not typically accessible for direct inspection. However, most sediment entering the system tends to settle along the invert of the pipe array as water levels recede, where it can be observed and removed during routine maintenance.

Some finer material may also pass through the system during storm events. Regular inspection of the pipe system and accumulated sediment at the invert helps identify when maintenance is needed and reduces the potential for sediment to migrate into the surrounding stone backfill.
