Residents of Rubonia subdivision have had persistent flooding for years. Established in 1920, Rubonia is one of the oldest communities in Florida. While some minor improvements were conducted in the 1980s to the aging drainage systems, residents’ anxieties would rise each hurricane season as the existing conditions gave rise to continued flooding to the area. In response, Manatee County initiated infrastructure improvements to the nearby sidewalks, drainage systems, and roadways to alleviate these issues. Manatee County turned to an A-2000™ PVC storm drain solution, manufactured by Contech Engineered Solutions, due to its superior strength, joint tightness and overall quality when compared to similar pipe-types, such as polypropylene, ductile iron, reinforced concrete pipe, or glass fiber reinforced pipe.
During the design phase, Contech was able to provide height of cover tables and buoyancy calculations to ensure a successful installation in this area, known for its higher water tables. The final storm drain system had diameters ranging from 15-inch to 36-inch for a total of 7,194 LF. Once the design had been completed, the contractor, Woodruff and Sons, was given a notice to proceed in October, but with heavy construction not beginning until January of 2021. The multimillion-dollar drainage improvement project started in January 2021 with completion expected by November 2022.
