Technical Description:
Installation of a stream crossing at U.S. 421 in Pleasureville marked the 100th CON/SPAN® installation in Kentucky. A double-barrel structure was initially considered, but ruled out due to maintenance concerns. Use of a clear-span CON/SPAN structure helped facilitate proper flow under the county road. The structure also sits on bedrock, which minimized foundation design and scour.
In addition, the headwall on the upstream side was elevated to help facilitate the roadway slope. The headwalls also have inserts for a top-mounted guiderail. “The reason we decided to go with precast was due to the fact that we got approval to close the road during the summer when school was not in session” said Mohamad Abdol, Design Engineer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. “A CON/SPAN structure gave us the quick installation we needed”
