Technical Description:
- (3) DuroMaxx® rainwater harvesting cisterns
The Strong Hall Project at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville consists of a new 268,000-square-foot academic science structure that will include a selected restoration of the original 1926 Sophronia Strong Hall and a total restoration of the 19th-Century Queen Ann Style Cowan Cottage at the corner of the site.
The facility will fully contain the Anthropology and Earth & Planetary Sciences departments. The building will suggest a theme of “Earth, Life & Time” focusing on the concepts and ideals of the academic departments housed in UT’s newest science building. The building will also seek to earn a LEED Silver certification.
To help meet these goals, the building will incorporate the use of a rainwater harvesting system that will collect and store rainwater from the roof of the building to be used for irrigating the buildings courtyard. The rainwater will be stored in three 84” diameter, 30‘ long cisterns made from DuroMaxx steel reinforced polyethylene.
This was an extremely tight site with multiple utility crossings, so flexibility in the design was an important consideration. DuroMaxx was chosen due to its ability to provide water tight connections, flexibility in design, and strength over other products.
The product was installed quickly and properly with the on-site assistance of Contech’s local distributor, Superior Drainage Products, Inc.
