Technical Description:
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) needed a bridge replacement structure to fix the Salem Church Road bridge due to deterioration. There was a strong need for a fast installation in order to minimize the traffic effects due to the road closure time that would accompany the replacement.
Aluminum Structural Plate was chosen for the bridge structure because it provided a fast, easy, lowcost installation with proven durability. Its light weight added to the ease of installation compared to other structures as it weighs 1/50 as much as reinforced concrete pipe, reducing assembly and equipment costs and allowing for easy handling of the long preassembled structures.
NCDOT’s Bridge Maintenance Division installed 49.5 feet of prefabricated Aluminum Structural Plate with welded attached headwalls for a successful solution, completed on schedule.
NCDOT has worked with Contech before and has utilized hundreds of their Aluminum Structural Plate Pipe, Pip-arch and Aluminum Box Culverts over the years.
