Central Terminal B is an international terminal at the Sacramento International Airport in Sacramento, California. The $1.03billion terminal was opened in October 2011. At the time of its construction, it was the largest public construction capital improvement project undertaken by Sacramento County. The project included a new central terminal and a 19-gate airside concourse, international arrivals facilities, passenger security checkpoints, an in-line baggage screening system, and more than 42,000-square-feet of concessions.

The new building would generate a massive amount of stormwater runoff. Engineers needed to meet stringent treatment control requirements from the Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership without taking away valuable land space. Complicating matters was the need for treating high flows within a shallow profile.

Contech Stormwater Design Engineers provided several iterations of structural calculations and installation estimates to help the engineer better analyze the best long-term solutions for the site. Ultimately, engineers from Kennedy Jenks Consultants specified four Stormwater Management Storm Filter’s with ZPG media, a blend of zeolite, perlite, and GAC to improve the performance of perlite and target organics, soluble metals, and other pollutants. Details of the four systems are below.

  • 8’x18’ StormFilter Vault with (36) 18” cartridges with ZPG Media
  • 8’x18’ StormFilter Vault with (43) 18” cartridges with ZPG Media
  • 11’x29’ StormFilter Vault with (75) 18” cartridges with ZPG Media and hatches
  • 11’x29’ StormFilter Vault with (75) 18” cartridges with ZPG Media and hatches

The use of the 18” cartridges was key, as they need only 2.3 feet of driving head, which was perfect for the shallow site. Since the StormFilter vaults were placed on the apron, Contech Stormwater Design Engineers designed all four vaults for aircraft loading.

The StormFilter vaults were installed in stages during the construction of the terminal.
