Mammoth Ski Resort is a large 3,500 acre ski resort located in eastern California on the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the Inyo National Forest. The resort receives over 30 ft of snow annually and features ski lifts, rental shops, restaurants, ski and snowboard schools and lodging. Over the summer, the resort offers other activities including mountain biking, hiking, fishing, golf and rock climbing.
In order to sustain access to the resort, two structures were needed along Lake Mary Road. The first was a 200- ft. long, 16-ft. round MULTI-PLATE® bike tunnel. Adjacent to the bike tunnel, a second structure was needed to serve as both a roadway underpass and a ski overpass. Maintaining access into the resort during the busy season was essential so the owner, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area (MMSA), turned to Contech for a quick and cost efficient replacement. Just eleven days later, Contech supplied a 36-ft. x 18.75-ft. SUPER-SPANTM structure, 172 ft in length.
“In the 20 years I’ve been in the construction profession, I’ve never seen a major supplier react so quickly, “ said Tom Hodges, Planning Department with MMSA. “Contech did a remarkable job”
Aside from the design-build aspect of this project, the main challenge included the design of a custom shape for the SUPER-SPAN. Because MMSA wanted to improve the tunnel geometry while maintaining the same alignment, a custom shape was required. The custom shape met their requirements, accommodated the improvements and allowed a rise high enough for tunnel clearance as well as a length wide enough for the ski run overpass.
