In 2008, legislative bonding funds were dedicated to forest roads and bridge maintenance and construction and were utilized to fund the replacement of a deteriorating structure located along a trail in the Badoura State Forest.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources chose a 19-ft. x 6-ft.1-in. Aluminum Box Culvert with full invert, headwalls and wingwalls for its low cost and speed of installation. In just 1.5 weeks, the contractor - Aspen Construction - completed demolition of the original structure as well as assembled, installed and backfilled the new structure. The project began on a Monday and by Thursday, the structure had been installed and backfilled enough so that traffic could be resumed over the weekend.

“The installation of the project went smoothly,” stated Jon Fank, Project Manager of Aspen Construction. “It was a great product for this application and the suggested layout of the project really sped up assembly and shortened the overall length of the project.”

In addition, the light weight of the structure made it easily transportable to the remote location, 2.5 miles off the main road (Highway 87). The low cost was also factored into the decision.

“This structure was an economical alternative for this location and we are pleased with it,” said Paul Ouren, P.E., Senior Engineer with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
