When an existing structure crossing a stream on East Creek Road was deemed undersized in span, rise and length, a replacement was needed. In search of a structure designed to meet 100 year storm requirements, the project's owner, the Town of Bradford, Wisconsin, and RH Batterman (RHB), the project's engineer, turned to Contech Engineered Solutions for help.

A 19'-10" span x 7'-8" rise Aluminum Box Culvert with aluminum headwalls and wingwalls was designed for a 75 year service life and selected for its low cost and ease of construction. The 49.5' long structure was assembled near the site and then lifted into place with an excavator. The headwalls and wingwalls were installed in the same day.

"The contractor, Ayre Excavating, began demolition of the existing structure on a Tuesday and the new Aluminum Box Culvert was set and backfilled by Friday of the same week," stated Todd Needham, Principal with RHB. "Initial assembly of the structure to final paving took approximately ten working days. With almost a 20' span, a traditional bridge structure would have taken months to complete and at a substantially higher cost."

In the end, the Aluminum Box Culvert provided a reliable system with ease of installation and in-field support by Contech throughout the installation process.

"The efficiency and cost advantages provided by the Aluminum Box Culvert for the Town of Bradford are undeniable," concluded Needham.
