Technical Description:
Located in East Billings, Montana, a structural plate culvert installed in the 1960s had reached the end of its service life and needed to be replaced. Originally, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) considered replacing the culvert. Ultimately, they determined that an open-cut and replace method would not be feasible due to budget constraints as well as potential extended road closures. Instead, the MDT decided to reline the existing structure with a polymer-coated HEL-COR® pipe-arch culvert. This solution proved to be the most cost-effective and time-efficient option. The segmental slip lining approach allowed for a quick installation with virtually no traffic interruption.
Contech manufactured custom pipe stick lengths to fit the specific insertion pit dimensions (10 feet), providing even greater ease of install. Steel skids were also welded to the outside of the pipe for added benefit in the installation process. Once slipped into the original host culvert, the new HEL-COR pipe-arch was grouted and set, providing a fully structural solution that would extend the life of the existing culvert for another 100+ years.
