Technical Description:
Due to the booming economy in Bowling Green, KY, additional housing was necessary, and a plan was put into place to construct a new 100-lot residential development to aid in the expansion. As a result of this needed development, a storm sewer system was included in the project specifications.
Bowling Green has always been a community that has used corrugated metal pipe (CMP) as a primary product for storm sewer construction, but there were added benefits to incorporating a ULTRA FLO® spiral rib solution. ULTRA FLO pipe has a smooth interior while its exterior box ribs provide structural strength that make it the industry alternative to reinforced concrete pipe . Using an ULTRA FLO® spiral rib storm sewer system allowed the designer to maintain the hydraulic design requirements of a Manning’s n of .012 while providing significant cost-savings.
Contech Engineered Solutions manufactured ULTRA FLO in diameters of 30-inch and larger to meet the project requirements. Additionally, the nearby Contech manufacturing plants greatly reduced lead time, which allowed them to meet the contractor’s scheduling needs. Because ULTRA FLO weighs less than 10% of concrete pipe and is available in longer lengths, handling and installation costs were greatly reduced. The entire storm sewer system was installed on time and under budget.
