Technical Description:
This busy thoroughfare in Greensboro, North Carolina, with an unusually wide roadway called for a unique bridging solution. A new pedestrian pony truss bridge had to cross the four-lane freeway and its neighboring access road. To accomplish this, a twin-span solution was proposed to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Two 147’ x 8’ weathering steel bridges were placed end-to- end to achieve the length needed to cross the roadways. The concrete bridge deck was poured on site. To ensure pedestrian safety, galvanized handrails were installed and the entire walkway was enclosed with brown vinyl fencing.
The two Connector ® style truss bridges were provided by Contech, and installed in two days by Blythe Construction, Inc. Contech provided several Continental ® pedestrian bridges for installation along US Highway 29, known as the “American Tobacco Trail”
