Technical Description:
When the City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, needed a bridge to span a spillway into the Big Sioux River, they contacted Contech Engineered Solutions. After reviewing the site requirements, the city chose a 150’ long by 10’ wide Contintental ® prefabricated weathering steel structure.
For additional pedestrian safety, two inch vinyl coated fencing was chosen for the sides and top of the bridge. Ipe hardwood was selected for the decking because of its durability and low maintenance.
The bridge is a vital link in the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Department trail system. Totaling about 15 miles in length, the paved bike path parallels a sweeping U-shape bend in the Big Sioux River. Bikers can access the trail at Falls Park near downtown Sioux Falls, where the river tumbles over an interesting series of cascades. The trail then proceeds south through a sequence of parks on the river floodplain.
