Technical Description:
Rapid residential growth in the eastern region of Aurora had significantly increased traffic volumes on various key roadways, including McCoy Drive. The four-lane road serves not only major east-west traffic, but also provides key access to Eola Road, a major north-south collector.
An at-grade crossing at this location previously served approximately one-quarter of the school’s students as well as non-related foot and bicycle traffic. Increasing traffic volumes at the intersection made crossing McCoy Drive more difficult and pedestrian safety became a critical issue.
The new bridge had to be aesthetically and environmentally pleasing to fit the Fox Valley Park District’s Oakhurst Linear Park and surrounding homes. These design concerns led to the construction of a 130’ long weathering steel Continental ® bridge with vertical safety rails, concrete stairwells, retaining walls and full landscaping.
The bridge was fully designed and fabricated in less than 12 weeks. Once completed, the structure was delivered to the site and installed in one day.
