Located on the Old Mission Peninsula outside of Traverse City, the 60-acre Mari Vineyards site sits on a bluff overlooking the pristine fresh waters of the Grand Traverse East Bay. Old Mission Peninsula is in the heart of northern Michigan wine country hosting a variety of vineyards, tasting rooms, and beautiful views. In 2015, Mari Vineyard established a state-of-the-art winery and tasting room, becoming a premiere destination for every wine loving tourist.
When Mari Vineyards' founder, Marty Lagina, mixed his passion of Northern Michigan with his desire to grow exotic varieties of grapes, he was able to develop award-winning wines. Lagina has been an influential entrepreneur in the area with a passion across many industries, including creating and staring in The History Channel’s hit show, “The Curse of Oak Island.” As part of the winery, Lagina and his team created the first Northern Michigan winery with an extensive underground barrel aging area.
To create a cave-like atmosphere, the development team turned to Contech Engineered Solutions for a solution. Contech provided 264' of 16' x 11' CON/SPAN® B-Series® Vault System. The vault consists of three separate caves meeting at a center oculus. The oculus provides a domed opening to allow natural light to shine into the caverns. At depths ranging from 10 to 25 feet below ground, the caverns naturally provide temperatures consistently between 55 and 60°F and high humidity, both considered ideal for wine making and storage. At 16 feet wide, the arches offer plenty of room for stacked wine storage on either side, and a center row wide enough for equipment to maneuver the barrels as needed.
"This was my first experience with Contech, and they exceeded expectations in design, construction and delivery time," concluded Lionel A. Thomas II, Managing Member of Pegasus Holdings and Land Development. "What an incredible product, a must see in the flesh!”
