MadTree Brewing is one of Cincinnati’s fastest growing craft breweries, brewing such beers as PsycHOPathy, Happy Amber, and LIFT. A new $18M production brewery, taproom, and event center was constructed in the former RockTenn Building in the Oakley neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio. The project is serving as an anchor for the Oakley business district while bringing new jobs into the City of Cincinnati and the Oakley neighborhood.
The construction of the new facility necessitated a need for a detention system to capture runoff from the roof, parking lot, and other impervious surfaces.
Engineers at IBI Group designed an inline detention system made from 395 LF of 72” diameter, 16 gage, Aluminized Steel Type 2 that provides 12,201 CF of storage.
Corrugated metal pipe (CMP) was selected as it provided the flexibility to meet multiple site constraints including a constricted, urban environment and several utility conflicts. Contech provided full design assistance and delivered a complete system by manufacturing the pipe and custom fabrications including elbows, stubs, risers, and an outlet control weir plate needed for this unique system. Using the flexibility of CMP and inline detention, cost savings were realized by eliminating all concrete structures as would typically be needed with a traditional storm sewer system. Risers were used in place of concrete catch basins, custom elbows were used wherever a bend in the system was needed, and a prefabricated weir plate replaced the need for a concrete outlet control structure.
Installation took place using excavators with straps to sit the pipe, gaskets and steel bands for the joints, and a rock thrower to backfill around and between the pipe barrels.
