Technical Description:
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) needed to replace a bridge over Norfolk Southern railroad tracks in Cleveland, Ohio. Great Lakes Construction proposed a value engineered solution to ODOT to use a CON/SPAN® structure in lieu of the original designed bridge at grade. The bridge-at-grade was designed with prestressed box beams on full height abutments.
The solution proposed by Great Lakes Construction consisted of using 48-foot span x 11-foot rise precast CON/SPAN® arch units with precast headwalls and wingwalls on top of 12-foot tall pedestal walls. The pedestal walls would be placed on top of a pile cap foundation, providing additional vertical clearance necessary for the trains. ODOT accepted the value engineering with a cost savings of $100,000 over a bridge-at-grade.
The CON/SPAN® structure was installed in just 12 hours over the course of two days. Rail traffic was maintained, allowing the scheduled trains through twice daily.
