When scour eroded the ends of a culvert along KY 626, a solution was needed to stop the scour while also widening the shoulders along either side of the highway. In order to meet the latter requirement, the Kentucky Department of Highways (KDoH) decided to extend the length of the existing structure.
Two 13’-10" x 5’-5" Aluminum Box Culverts from Contech Engineered Solutions were selected as the best choice because they perfectly matched the existing product. The new culverts were bolted onto either side of the existing structure, extending the original culvert by 16’ on each side.
In order to protect against future scour, end treatments were added to both extensions and, as required, the road remained open throughout construction. A quick turnaround time was also essential, and the entire project was completed in less than four days.
"Contech was very easy to work with," stated Justin Young, PE, Transportation Engineer Supervisor with KDoH. "The assembly crew was fast and efficient with assembly finished within 3.5 days, while keeping the road open for the duration of the project. The KDoH is well pleased with the finished product."
