Technical Description:
This 216-foot long tunnel replaced a bridge carrying the Indiana Toll Road over an abandoned railroad track.
The CON/SPAN® structure is part of a wide scale effort to reduce deer-related traffic accidents on the heavilytraveled toll road. The larger opening of the new tunnel and natural subgrade lead to a more inviting alternative to crossing the roadway. Deer, a serious danger to Toll Road drivers, can now pass safely under the highway.
“This tunnel has definitely been functioning as it was intended for,” said Project Engineer Jerry Mohajeri of MHM Associates. “The deer in this area now pass through the tunnel. The structure was intended for an environmental purpose and that is really the purpose it is fulfilling.”
