The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) included several improvement projects along the Interstate 4 (I-4) corridor entitled I-4 Ultimate Project. I-4 Ultimate is a 21-mile reconstruction project that outlined the complete rebuild of the interstate from west of State Route 435 (SR435) in Seminole County. This project broke ground in 2015 and will be completed in 2021. The intent was to seamlessly connect the north and south segment of I-4 Beyond the Ultimate project.
Construction work on the I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project’s end goal is to build a better I-4. Throughout the past few years, I-4 has undergone a tremendous transformation and continues to take shape across the 21-mile stretch of Central Florida’s most vital transportation artery.
As part of these improvements, an 84-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) that ran under the interstate was scheduled for reline. With known joint issues, FDOT wanted to ensure the culvert was rehabilitated sooner rather than later, and the improvement project was a perfect opportunity to address the issue.
Working with a local contractor proficient in reline solutions, Central Pipe Rehab, FDOT selected a DuroMaxx® SRPE reline solution. DuroMaxx® SRPE, an FDOT/FHWA approved solution, is a steel reinforced polyethylene pipe that provided both the hydraulic and structural requirements desired for the project. This solution was ideal, as the lightweight liner was easily sliplined into the existing host pipe in 24-foot segments, blocked and then grouted into place, providing a completely structural solution to address the concerns of the existing RCP culvert.
Donald Goff, general manager at Central Pipe Rehab, commented, “It was the ease of handling and installation of the DuroMaxx liner pipe that made this project possible. There were also turns required to install the liner pipe that were made much easier as we were able to incorporate custom fittings with DuroMaxx.”
