The construction of a new Holiday Inn in Livonia, Michigan called for the construction of an underground stormwater detention and water quality treatment system. The system needed to meet the Wayne County stormwater management requirements that call for full treatment and detention of the 10-year storm.
To meet the objectives, engineers from PEA worked with Contech to develop a cost effective, efficient design. The 10-acre site was mostly impervious, so infiltration was not practical. As such, the solution consisted of two Vortechs hydrodynamic separators and two underground detention systems made from 60” diameter corrugated metal pipe (CMP).
The two Vortechs hydrodynamic separators provide water quality treatment. Vortechs is a hydrodynamic separator that combines swirl concentration and flow controls into a shallow treatment unit that traps and retains trash, debris, sediment, and hydrocarbons from stormwater runoff.
After treatment, stormwater is conveyed to two underground detention systems, both made from 60” solid CMP providing 53,237 CF of storage. Stormwater exceeding the site’s allowable discharge rate is stored in these two systems and released slowly over time.
Installation took approximately one week. There was a small area to stage and install the CMP system within phase I and the layout required for future heavy construction loading over the UDS system during construction of the new building.
“The project went smoothly without any issues which is what we expect from a Contech supplied system,” stated Jeff Currier of Robert Clancy.
