Technical Description:
The Ohio Department of Transportation replaced a bridge in Hamilton County, Ohio, on US 50. The CON/SPAN® structure was installed in just two days with the help of a 500-ton crane and a rigger lift with a 50-ton capacity.
A temporary bridge was installed over the construction site while temporary retaining walls held fill in place during the excavation process. The 253-foot length was divided in half to accomplish the installation. The crane, which was situated on one side of the mid-point, lowered the 32-ton units down to the rigger lift, which then moved each unit under the temporary bridge and into place. This use of the rigger lift enabled the crew to easily set half of the job on the first day.
After the installation was complete, 26 feet of cover was added to bring the grade up to its original height. The temporary bridge was eliminated and US 50 was back in business.
