To maximize the usable land as they expand their service yard, North Central Construction, Inc. wanted to enclose an irrigation wasteway that cut down the middle of their property. Based on the requirements of the wasteway operator, East Columbia Basin Irrigation District, North Central Construction needed a pipe material that could handle the 7’ burial depth as well as an operating pressure of 6 psi.

North Central Construction selected DuroMaxx steel reinforced thermoplastic ribbed pipe for low head irrigation and storm sewer systems from Contech DuroMaxx exceeds existing high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe with its ability to support up to 50’ of fill and 15 psi joints when tested in accordance with ASTM 3212. With a Manning’s “n” coefficient of 0.012, DuroMaxx was the right pipe for the job.

“DuroMaxx pipe is easy to work with and went together smoothly” said Garry Kneedler of North Central Construction, Inc. “The pipe was placed an average of 7’ below grade, under one road crossing with heavy truck traffic and both ends of the pipe were attached to 36-in. of concrete pipe. All of this was completed in 5 days. We will definitely use this pipe on future projects”

An engineered pipe, DuroMaxx presents a structured outer profile wall and a smooth internal surface. Suitable for removal of gravity flow stormwater and detention applications, DuroMaxx is extruded using a pressure rated HDPE resin that fully encapsulates the ribs of steel for added durability. The combination of steel and polyethylene material structure creates a pipe with high strength and low material mass, resulting in significant performance attributes.

“I am impressed with the rigidity of DuroMaxx pipe” said Ian Eccles, the District Engineer for the East Columbia Basin Irrigation District.

DuroMaxx is available in standard 20 foot lengths, and will soon be available in diameters up to 120 inches. In addition, it is compatible with a full range of joint-tight fabricated fittings such as bends, elbows, tees, slope junctions and reducers. The pipe also can be field-modified for custom applications.
