Technical Description:
The New Jersey Port Authority continues to expand their tollways to include additional lanes for vehicles that carry E-Z Pass sensors. The high-speed gantry system electronically reads the vehicle’s E-Z Pass, eliminating the driver’s need to stop and pay the toll. The system then bills the owner for the toll.
The project includes a Continental ® prefabricated painted steel stairway system and pedestrian access walkway. The glass-enclosed walkway is climate controlled and allows workers safe access to the tollbooths. The large stairway system was pre-fabricated and fully assembled at the plant. Then, it was knocked down to its separate rises for delivery. Finally, it was bolted together on location at the Hillsdale, NJ facility. This approach saved time and money over on-site construction.
Commuters are quickly adapting to the convenient, time-saving toll collection system that is helping reduce traffic back-ups. The Port Authority expects to see usage rates into the 70 percent range.
