In the summer of 2002, the City of Lafayette constructed a new bridge to improve traffic flow and serve as an attractive addition to a developing area. The bridge was built over the Vermillion River and required erosion protection against rapid waterflow. ArmorFlex Class 30S articulating concrete block (ACB) mats provided security to the shoreline, abutments and outfalls from adjacent residential neighborhoods.

A revetment of ArmorFlex 30S ACB cabled mattresses, a total of 37,000 sf, was installed up and downstream of the bridge. The installation took place in stages as the revetment areas under the bridge deck were placed prior to deck fabrication.

The revetment of the bridge was finalized after the deck was finished and heavy equipment was cleared. Native soils were seeded in the block units’ open cells to promote vegetation.
