During a $100 million renovation project at the State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals football team, in Glendale, Arizona, many improvements were implemented. Some of the upgrades to the 14 year old stadium included new food, bar, club and lounge areas, restrooms, and entrance features such as shade over the security lines and a new parking lot much closer to the stadium.

“The fans are what this is all about," said Arizona Cardinals team president, Michael Bidwill. "We really try to focus on and listen to our fans to make changes and improve things, not just on the field, but off the field, as well.”

Improvements made off the field, for example, include the addition of a new parking lot with 4,015 spaces. Since the lot was constructed right across the street from the stadium, a tunnel was needed to provide safe access for pedestrians under the busy Bethany Home Road and to the stadium. Switching from the old, off-site parking lot to the new one will save the city about $250,000 a season for the shuttles, and $27,000 for traffic control and lighting. It also fulfills a promise the city made a decade ago to add parking near the stadium.

As the best solution for the pedestrian tunnel, a 20' x 9'-6" CON/SPAN® B-Series Bridge System, 67' in length, was selected and installed during the football off-season in just one day. The CON/SPAN structure met all project requirements while also providing a quality product and a quick installation. Once the tunnel was installed, a couple fun features were added. As pedestrians approach the tunnel, for instance, they will spot a Cardinals logo sandblasted into the concrete, and once inside the tunnel, the words "Arizona Cardinals" are very prominent. During this tunnel construction phase, temporary access to the stadium for concerts and other events was provided.

After the completion of so many crucial improvements, the stadium is all set to host Super Bowl LVII in 2023.
