Located just 15 miles south of Bend, Oregon, the Sunriver Community is a renowned leisure, wedding and conference destination. During World War II, the land was home to Camp Abbot, a military training center for the U.S. Army. Current activities for outdoor enthusiasts in the picturesque area include golfing, hiking, biking, fly-fishing, skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. Other amenities include an athletic club and spa, restaurants and shopping.

With so many trails in the area, a pedestrian underpass was needed to connect a series of trails at a grade separated crossing, making it safer for both pedestrians below and vehicles above. Original budget estimates did not allow for inclusion of grade-separated bike and pedestrian improvements, although the whole team knew it was high on the community’s wish list. Once the project was underway, Sunriver Owners Association (SROA), Century West Engineering (CWE) and Marcum & Sons (M&S) reached out to the local Contech Engineered Solutions representative to explore the possibility of including a bike and pedestrian underpass within the project footprint.

In the end, the team determined that a 12' x 8’-6” CON/SPAN® B-Series Bridge System, 50' in length, would be the best solution due to past experience with the product. A CON/SPAN was selected for a number of reasons including cost savings, but due to the resort setting, aesthetics also played a big role in the decision. In addition, a custom formliner was chosen for the structure's end treatments and hand-stained to blend in with the aesthetics of the development.

According to Thomas Headley, P.E., CWRE, Project Manager/Office Supervisor with CWE, "The Abbot Drive project remains an excellent example of the success that comes from a team working together toward a common goal. Contech was responsive and helpful in preparing a cost and timeline proposal. Together, the team was able to provide the SROA with a landmark bike and pedestrian tunnel within the original overall budget and schedule. Recognizing the significance of the tunnel project to the Sunriver community, Contech ensured the entire installation process was overseen by an on-site Contech representative, highly experienced in the assembly and placement of CON/SPAN structures.”

M&S installed the CON/SPAN structure via crane in just one day. Brian Marcum with M&S said, "As a contractor, I greatly appreciated the response time and organization from Contech. We install a lot of structures across the state, and this one went very well."

Lastly, Mark E. Smith, Director of SROA, added that "it was a joy to be part of this project. The pedestrian tunnel replaced a grade crossing that was very busy and had a negative impact on traffic flow. The new pedestrian tunnel is functional and fits within the natural environment that is Sunriver."
