Representatives from two U.S. companies, Baker Concrete Construction, Inc. and Contech Construction Products Inc. donated this bridge to the people of Honduras one year after Hurricane Mitch barreled across Central America. Working with the Honduran government to select a site, BAKER - CON/SPAN International chose to install the 52-ft-wide bridge spanning 20 ft and valued at $150,000 to repair the last major washout on the road connecting Tegucigalpa with the Valle de Angeles, a major tourist attraction and artisan center. The bridge was constructed with 11 precast modular bridge units weighing approximately 145 tons.

The units were manufactured in Florida, shipped on a freighter to Puerto Cortes, Honduras, and then trucked 190 miles inland to the site where they were installed in a total of three hours over three days using an 80-ton crane.

A recent cable released by the U.S. Embassy in Honduras reports: “BAKER - CON/SPAN International is the first U.S. company to register a success story on an infrastructure reconstruction project related to Hurricane Mitch. Their company representatives have been persistent in following up on trade leads in Honduras and have a product that employs local labor and appears to be price competitive with local infrastructure solutions. While many U.S. firms have been disappointed with the apparent lack of opportunities in Central America after Mitch, the BAKER - CON/SPAN efforts finally seem to be paying off”
