The continued expansion of Starbucks included the construction of a new location in Pace, Florida. The site selected did not provide the space necessary to construct a surface pond large enough to address all of the site’s stormwater objectives. Therefore, the original design supplemented the surface pond with an underground storage facility consisting of 60” plastic chambers.

While this design satisfied the site’s stormwater objectives, the contractor thought there may be a better solution, one that could free up land space and save money. The contractor had utilized Contech’s perforated pipe in lieu of chambers on a recent project and anticipated they could do the same on this project.

Contech engineers utilized the advantages of our perforated pipe, which include reduced minimum cover and the ability to minimize the quantity of stone backfill. The Contech perforated pipe solution requires only 12” of minimum cover compared to 24” required for the 60” chamber solution. The perforated pipe solution reduced the stone quantity required by more than 25 percent.

After the two designs were compared, the perforated pipe solution proved to be more efficient and cost-effective. Contech’s pipe solution optimized the site’s vertical storage, leading to a reduced footprint and reduced earthwork. Similar to most other projects in Florida, this project is located in a region where the freight distance required to haul stone backfill makes this material expensive. Contech's ability to significantly reduce the stone quantity and engineering support lead to the decision to select Contech’s perforated pipe solution over the original chamber design.
