A national automotive supplier selected an industrial site in Holt, MI, for expansion. The site was challenging as it was zoned industrial, was adjacent to existing wetlands, and offered grading challenges.

A site environmental study identified petroleum hydrocarbons from previous operations, so infiltration was not an option. As the stormwater collected from the site would be discharged to regulated wetlands, new Ingham County Drain Commission rules required that the water leaving the detention system be held for an extended period before release. In addition, pre-treatment was required before storage. As the engineer was out-of-state, they requested local design assistance from Contech for on-site underground detention water storage and related water quality systems.

Contech provided various layout options, structural calculations and material estimates to help the engineer analyze options to store and treat approximately 86,000 cubic feet of stormwater storage volume. Contech also provided the necessary engineering data and assisted in permitting activities.

This project had a tight timeframe for engineering submittal (February 2020) with permits and construction activities to start by June 2020, to allow the building to be operational by the end of the 2020 calendar year. As the proposed detention system was large, material availability that allowed the project scheduled to be achieved was a necessity of the design.

During installation, some of the pipe was damaged by construction equipment placed over the pipe with insufficient cover. As an alternative to removing and replacing the damaged pipe, Contech provided an alternate CMP pipe patch that could be installed without requiring additional excavation and pipe removal activities. This repair was implemented within three weeks and allowed the system to be installed without delay.

Contech was able to supply almost 3,000 feet of 78-inch CMP detention within four weeks, and despite a minor delay during installation, the contractor completed construction as scheduled.

“This project required ongoing coordination between Contech and Hoffman Brothers,” explained Michael Osminski, Project Manager of Hoffman Brothers. “We needed some timely on-site assistance during installation and backfill operations which Contech provided as they provided the necessary guidance to make this a successful project.”
