Rogers County needed to replace a narrow, deteriorating, 80 year old structure along Road EW-400, a county road between Collinsville and Oologah, Oklahoma. The new structure needed to handle heavy traffic loads and be wide enough to accommodate two lanes of traffic instead of one.

“Under Roger County’s eight year plan, it was stated in an engineering inspection that the bridge needed to be replaced” said Mike Helm, County Commissioner with Roger County. “In addition, the new, wider structure was needed to accommodate the growth in the county”

A 24’ x 9’ CON/SPAN® Bridge System, 36’ in length, was chosen to replace the aging structure. The precast structure was chosen for its low maintenance, its ability to reduce erosion and its clear span which prevents debris from collecting under the bridge. This is the third CON/SPAN structure to be installed in the County since 2007.

In addition, 1,200 square feet of ArmorFlex® articulating concrete blocks were installed on the slopes near the bridge in order to allow for stormwater runoff while also providing maximum scour protection.

Due to the easy installation of both the CON/SPAN structure and articulating concrete blocks, the County was able to utilize their own crews, allowing for the project to be funded with Oklahoma DOT “force account” funds.

“Due to the quick and easy installation of the precast structure, we believe that in the future, we will be able to install these bridge systems within a month from tear-down to allowing traffic to cross it” added Helm. “This product is the type that can penetrate the market to make a bridge available for miniscule dollars”
