At the Greater Rochester International Airport, a two- year, $20 million construction project is leading to safety improvements for planes, cars and trucks. A portion of the project was aimed at a tunnel program to improve the Runway 10-28 Safety Area. Installation of two CON/SPAN® precast vehicular tunnels allowed two roadways — previously crossing the runway area - to be rerouted underground.

The tunnels permitted the airport to add a 1,000-foot long grass aircraft landing safety area, required by the FAA. The structures; therefore, were designed to meet the project requirements for aircraft loading, specifically an Airbus A320-200. Use of the precast system allowed the tunnels to be installed in two phases over just a one-month period.

The ‘landside’ tunnel, spanning 42 ft, is used for fuel trucks and delivery trucks and has a length of 657 ft. The second, ‘airside’ tunnel, 32 ft in span and 600 ft long, is strictly for on-airport vehicle use. The two tunnels help separate private equipment from public delivery equipment and provide a significant level of airport security.

Headwalls included formliner that was required by the airport to match the 38,000 square ft of retaining wall also included on the project. The project also included rerouting of high-pressure oil lines to conform to the alignment of the vehicular tunnels.
