Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates two of the world’s most advanced neutron scattering research facilities: the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).

The SNS facility was in need of a replacement for an existing HDPE culvert due to additional loads that it would have to bear with future expansion and development planned to occur in the area. The engineers on site, Barge Waggoner Sumner & Cannon, Inc. (BWSC), wanted to replace the 200 LF of 36” HDPE and increase the cover from 30’ to 40’ for future development. After consulting with the ORNL engineer, it was clear that the most economical solution was not to dig out the pipe 32’ down and replace but rather to reline the existing culvert.

After looking at multiple options for rehabilitation including both HDPE and PVC solutions, they selected A2™ Liner from Contech Engineered Solutions LLC. A2 Liner offers a slip lining technology with direct-bury strength of 46 psi stiffness—which means it doesn’t depend on the host pipe for long-term structural performance making it a clear choice due to its ability to increase load bearing capacity of the existing structure.

The A2 Liner pipe arrived on-site and was ready to install. Given A2 Liner’s proven slipline installation methods, the contractor, National Resource Management, was thrilled with the ease of installation and grouting process.
