Technical Description:
This CON/SPAN® structure serves as a stream crossing for part of a fast-track project for the South Carolina Department of Transportation. With nearly 40 feet of elevation difference from roadway to stream, pedestal walls were required to reduce fill on this 42-foot span and shorten the overall structure length. Due to wall heights, MurEbal® walls were used as pedestals and wingwalls. Pedestal height was 21’- 6” and the maximum wingwall height was 34’- 4”. The rise of the CON/SPAN® structure was 11 feet, but with the added precast wall panels, the total rise became 29.5 feet.
The CON/SPAN structure completely spanned the wetland, which avoided the extensive and costly permitting process that is often required with precast box culverts. Also, unlike a conventional bridge, the precast structure was designed and constructed quickly, allowing the total installation to be completed ahead of schedule.
