During a routine inspection, two adjacent 10-ft. x 10-ft. concrete box culverts running under the KY 40/KY 292 intersection were found to be structurally insufficient. In determining the best solution to address the project needs, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) turned to Contech for help. After determining that a reline solution was feasible, DuroMaxx® steel reinforced polyethylene (SRPE) was selected as the reline solution due to its large diameter offering, low profile, and light handling weights as well as its deep cover structural capabilities.
This reline solution was ideal as it allowed the roadway above to remain open the entire time, with no detours or delays needed. The 10-ft. x 10-ft. boxes were relined with 120-inch diameter, DuroMaxx® SRPE utilizing a push-pull method to set eight individual 20-ft. sections into place within the existing culverts. For ease of installation, the pipe was manufactured with HDPE skid rails welded to the bottom haunches. The plane end DuroMaxx® pipes were joined using 24-inch wide flat metal bands and 12-inch wide flat gaskets.
After the box culverts were relined with the DuroMaxx® pipe, the contractor installed 12-ft. x 12-ft. box extensions along with wing walls and a flared concrete skirt for added hydraulic improvements.
An inspection in 2020 of the 4-year-old installation was conducted. Water marks indicated the pipes had experienced full flow conditions in the past. Overall, the DuroMaxx® 120-inch diameter pipe appeared in excellent condition, maintaining excellent shape control with no apparent corrosion or abrasion.
