Technical Description:
The City of Franklin Park Department wanted to expand Liberty Park, an 85-acre city park with three baseball fields and few amenities. The expansion included tennis courts, pavilions, restrooms, hiking/biking trails and a covered amphitheater with seating for approximately 400 people.
The expansion project also called for a new bridge to serve as a major connection between the existing park site and the new expansion area. The Park District wanted a structure that would compliment the natural wooded surroundings of the new park area. After reviewing several bridge options and styles for the new site, project engineer Smith, Seckman & Reid, Inc. (SSR) and landscape architect, Dalhoff Thomas Daws selected a Contech truss bridge.
One of the largest concerns of the City was environmental preservation. Crews were able to install the bridge over the creek without disturbing the natural environment around the creek bed. “We have used other bridges in the past” said Lisa Clayton, the City of Franklin’s Park Director. “But recently we have only been using Contech bridges in all of our parks. We are very happy with the results and the general public is very happy as well. When you find something that works, you stick with it”
