Technical Description:
After many years of flooding, the Lancaster Country Club hired RETTEW Associates, Inc., to design a new bridge for the golf course. A Connector ® style truss bridge was chosen to match an existing Continental ® bridge installed in 1994. To avoid disrupting the course’s flow of play, the new bridge had to be installed at the old site between the 6th green and 7th tee.
“At that location down in the river bottom, we could free span the river, but could not place the bridge above the maximum flood elevation” said Quentin Rissler, Bridge Engineer for RETTEW. “So we designed the structure to withstand the stream flow pressure while partially submerged during the 25 to 100 year flood events”
The construction work and installation were done during the winter to avoid the busy golf season. When the bridge was delivered to the site, a smaller crane removed the three sections from the truck for assembly. Once the sections were bolted together, a massive 500-ton crane lifted the bridge out over the waterway. From there, workmen carefully guided it onto the concrete abutments.
