Technical Description:
The Kern Valley Sanitary Landfill is located in a remote and beautiful area near Lake Isabella, California, at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Lake Isabella is a popular weekend recreational area for residents, and maintaining the natural appearance of the channel was extremely important to the community.
In order to withstand the water velocities of 17 fps, ArmorFlex Class 70L articulated concrete block mats were selected for the channel lining. These mats will resist demanding hydraulic conditions while still maintaining enough flexibility to move with the differential settlement that occurs. While several other options were considered, the ArmorFlex ACB system was chosen as the best solution to improve the surface water management at the landfill.
Transported on 40-ft. flatbed trailers, the ArmorFlex mats were dropped and staged onsight to maximize production. The 115,810 sf of material required to protect the channel was installed in only eight days.
