The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) undertook a crucial project that included both a bridge project as well as the widening of Interstate 35 from two lanes to three lanes in each direction for approximately eight miles.
This infrastructure development aimed at enhancing the highway conditions and safety for daily commuters. The road widening portion involved leveling and resurfacing a significant section of the roadway, necessitating an effective surface runoff solution to manage anticipated sheet flow efficiently.
To address the critical runoff concerns, the project called for a high-performance surface runoff solution. After careful consideration, a Contech Slotted Drain™ system, manufactured by Contech Engineered Solutions, was selected. The choice of this innovative solution would play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and functionality of the newly improved areas of the roadway.
The chosen system, as outlined in the project plans, consisted of 6,444 linear feet of 14-gage, 36-inch diameter Slotted Drain™ with 6-inch grates. The Slotted Drain™ system was manufactured at the nearby Contech facility in Ankeny, Iowa, and delivered promptly to the job site. This efficient supply chain process helped minimize any potential delays in the project timeline.
The Contech Slotted Drain™ system is engineered with robust grate and spacer plates designed to withstand deformation under the pressure of heavy traffic loads and thermal expansion. Its design has been rigorously tested to ensure its durability and reliability, even when subjected to truck loading, both parallel and perpendicular to the slot. The choice of a six-inch grate height aligns with industry standards for AASHTO H 20 loading, reinforcing its suitability for this project.
The decision to opt for the Contech Slotted Drain™ system was further proven by the positive previous experiences of both the Iowa DOT and Polk County with Contech solutions. The confidence placed in Contech's knowledge, expertise, and commitment to deliver high-quality solutions was instrumental in ensuring the success of this highway improvement project.
The installation of the new Slotted Drain™ system was a swift and seamless process. It was expertly integrated into the existing edge of the pavement, providing a surface runoff solution that efficiently manages water flow and significantly enhances the roadway conditions during storm events or heavy rain. This not only safeguards the infrastructure but also ensures the safety of motorists.
