Owner:
State Road & Tollway Authority/Cobb County
Engineer:
Atkins-Atlanta
Contractor:
Vertical Earth
Installation:
May 2020
Technical Description:
The site is nearly 9-acres, with 70% of the site impervious. Regulations from Cobb County called for 80% total suspended solids (TSS) removal and attenuation of the runoff to pre-development levels for storms up to and including the 25-year storm.
A Contech CDS hydrodynamic separator was selected to provide 80% TSS removal with the added benefit of 100% floatable trash removal on a site that sees vehicular traffic and various gross pollutants. The CDS' high hydraulic efficiency meant that a 10' diameter structure could provide both treatment flow and bypass capacity for the 25-year storm, while competitor offerings involved either larger structures or multiple structures. Treatment upstream of the underground detention system allowed for extra storage volume (approx. 33% of the total) to be provided by the stone backfill of the detention system This feature reduced the system footprint, saving material, excavation and installation cost.
The installation was well-organized. The Contech Field Operations Team supported the contractor with guidance on installing the CDS and a Contech Sales Engineer was on-site to support the contractor with the installation of the detention system. The contractor saved a significant amount of time by using a stone conveyor belt placement system to install the stone bedding and backfill.
Contech products' performance allowed for cost-effective design and installation of treatment and detention system, and Contech's support during the installation process ensured event-free, timely and economical installation.
