Farmington Hills converted the recently closed Harrison High School building into a new community center. The construction required compliance with new stormwater rules per the Oakland County Water Resource Commission that called for the capture and treatment of stormwater runoff. In addition, the City of Farmington Hills Engineering department wanted to ensure the stormwater system could achieve a 100-year design service life with suitable access to maintain the system throughout its service life.

There was no on-site detention system for water storage, so the stormwater system was upgraded to include a separate detention and water quality system. Engineers selected the CDS hydrodynamic separator to address water quality and a DuroMaxx Steel Reinforced Polyethylene (SRPE) detention system to address water quantity.

Design challenges included routing the storm pipe to the final location of the proposed solid detention system, achieving the 100-year service life, and identifying a cost-effective solution for the detention system. A comparison between DuraMaxx SRPE and concrete pipe showed Contech’s Duramax met all the design criteria at a lower cost.

The main header was installed first, with the matching 72-inch bell and spigot pipe installed without issue. A second header matched the pipe runs and connected with flat bands and gaskets. Pipe backfill was completed using natural MDOT 6-A aggregate and compacted between the pipe barrels.

“The project went well as coordinating with Contech was critical during installation as the issue of two large header systems was a concern before installation. The installation of the bell and spigot joints created a loud bang during installation, so we knew the joints were nice and tight,” said Joe Roberson, Site Superintendent with Cortis Brothers of Marine City, MI. “This was the first time we used this product, and the pipe was installed without any significant issues.”
