Technical Description:
Grant County replaced an abandoned railroad bridge with a CON/SPAN® pedestrian/bikeway tunnel in a rural part of Marion as part of a rails-to-trails project. Preservation of the railroad corridors is key to this hiking and biking trail. The award-winning Cardinal Greenway Trail will stretch 60 miles across the state, connecting five counties when complete.
Cardinal Greenway Inc., a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to creating and maintaining the trail, selected the design team of Claire Bennett Associates, an Indianapolis landscape architecture firm, to help design the structure. In keeping with the historical integrity of the project, the design specifications called for an aesthetic architectural facial treatment. Limestone was chosen to create the classic facade for the former section of the CSC railway line.
