The Wisconsin Korean War Veterans Memorial is located on an island in Lake Pacawa, adjacent to the Worzella Pines Park in Plover, Wisconsin. The Memorial pays tribute to the Wisconsin residents who fought, died or are listed as Missing in Action in the Korean War. The cast-in-place concrete shoreline protection walkway - known as the “Isle of Honor” - that leads out to the Memorial had cracked and chipped at the water line due to undermining caused by wave action and ice damming. AECOM decided to use ArmorFlex articulating concrete block systems to replace the cast-in-place concrete on the Memorial causeway as well as to reinforce the shoreline around the island.
“This project had very unique challenges in that the side slopes of the causeway were quite susceptible to undermining and must be able to move and yet be sturdy enough to last for the long term,” said David Hansen, P.E., Department Manager with AECOM.
ArmorFlex’s unique design offered superior protection and prevented undermining caused by ice damming and/or wave action. It provided the permanent solution needed for the Memorial.
“The ArmorFlex system provided everything we needed, and the service provided by the Contech team was outstanding,” said Hansen. “Construction was completed in two months, minimizing disruption to the Memorial.”
Originally dedicated 15 years ago, a re-dedication ceremony of the Memorial was held in June 2009.
