Residents of the City of Bowling Green, Kentucky were excited by the transformation of the 103-acre former Roy Cooksey Farm on Lovers Lane in the last undeveloped ground into a residential and commercial development called The Hub. The mixed-use development would include apartments in the first phase as well as additional roadways, hotels, theatre, etc.

Construction underway on a 41-acre portion near the back of the property, owned by Chandler Residential, turned the area into a 590-unit multifamily residential complex. This large development would require a robust storm sewer system to handle the additional runoff from the roadways to be included. The engineer of record, Arnold Consulting and Engineering Services, indicated that a deep bury storm sewer system would be necessary to handle the additional water from any storm events due to the increased impervious surfaces throughout the complex.

The contractor, Holland Inc., worked directly with Core & Main in Bowling Green to identify the best product solution for the storm sewer system. Ultimately, an ULTRA FLO® storm sewer system, manufactured by Contech Engineered Solutions, was selected. ULTRA FLO® provided the desired structural capabilities with its exterior box ribs that were able to handle the deep cover height requirements as well as the custom fittings to match the engineer’s design. Core & Main quickly supplied the system due to the fast turnaround time of the solution’s provider. And with a Manning’s “n” of 0.012, the ULTRA FLO® system would provide the hydraulic requirements of the storm sewer required by the engineer of record. The entire system included approximately 5,000 LF of 15-inch 2 2/3 HEL-COR® pipe along with the spiral rib piping system which included 1,800 LF of 18-inch diameter; 1,000 LF of 24-inch; 1,890 LF of 30-inch; 1,000 LF of 36-inch; 200 LF of 42-inch; and 1,200 LF of 48-inch to complete the ULTRA FLO® storm sewer system.

Both the contractor and the engineer were pleased with this solution for the multifamily residential complex. The future of the $200 million The Hub project was also slated to include more major building projects that will add to the hyper-development along the Lovers Lane corridor.

Core & Main representative, Casey Shaff, stated, "Contech Engineered Solutions, Core and Main and the Contractor, Holland Inc. have worked hand in hand through this process to ensure The Hub would be a successful project.  Contech serviced the project with professionalism, while understanding the on-site conditions and special request to guarantee all parties could prevail."
