After decades of planning by a team of consultants, the 70-acre Scissortail Park became a reality in the historical I-40 corridor of downtown Oklahoma City. Created from funds generated by a penny sales tax, the park operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is responsible for raising maintenance funds through donations, sponsorships and earned revenues. The park, located along the Oklahoma River, features ornamental gardens and woodlands, a 3.7 acre lake, a playground and water fountains for children, a seasonal roller rink, a dog park, a picnic grove, a restaurant, a performance stage and a great lawn.

As part of the project, a pedestrian crossing was needed to span the lake. It was imperative that the design of the structure fit the aesthetic and geometric needs of the site. The project was publicly bid by Oklahoma City, and the low bidder, Downey Contracting, reached out to Contech Engineered Solutions for help. A 240' x 14' Connector®-style Continental® Pedestrian Truss was selected as the best option to meet the project's requirements.

“The use of the Continental bridge allowed for faster construction on a project that had firm deadlines due to planting seasons," stated David E. Todd, P.E., Program Manager with the city. "Additionally, the sleek lines of the bridge allowed for a lake crossing which did not impede on the beauty of the lake and its surrounding areas.”

Contech’s local bridge consultant worked with Downey from pre-construction all the way through the on-site installation to ensure the delivery and installation of the structure was timely and seamless. The custom wood-look deck was provided by the contractor, and the overall finished project has become a focal point for park.

"Contech was great to work with," stated Rick Morris, Project Manager with Downey. "They provided the structural components of the radius bridge that form fit to the lake and surrounding landscape. Downey fashioned and fabricated the wood decking and railing out of Ipe, a Brazilian hardwood. This created a one of a kind unique bridge in the heart of Oklahoma City's crown jewel park."

The Scissortail Park project received the following recognition: 2020 Public Works Projects of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA) in the Structures category with budgets at least $75 million and 2020 Best Projects by Engineering News-Record (ENR). in the Landscape/Urban development category.
