Technical Description:
After nearly a decade, Route 18 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, has been transformed after major reconstruction and related improvements. The end result of the construction has improved overall safety of motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
The worn footpaths throughout the project limits indicated a demand for pedestrian facilities that did not exist within this section of the corridor. In 2005, NJDOT chose a Continental ® truss bridge to be placed over Route 18 at Carpender Road to allow for safe pedestrian passage.
In addition to safety, aesthetics was also a priority for the community. The Keystone ® style truss with a painted finish blends well with the noise walls, new sidewalks and lighting running along the corridor.
Route 18 is a heavily traveled highway that serves the needs of more than 85,000 vehicles per day and provides access to downtown New Brunswick, Rutgers University, local businesses and residential neighborhoods.
