The City of Rancho Mirage, located in the center of Southern California’s rapidly growing Palm Springs Valley, needed a bridge to provide elementary students with a safer route to school. Originally, the children were crossing a stream bed on a very narrow sidewalk located next to a very busy Highway 111. This was deemed unsafe and a bridge overpass was required to provide the students safe passage.
“We needed a pedestrian bridge that could be manufactured and delivered fast, and after days of research, the Continental EXPRESS® pedestrian bridge from Contech Engineered Solutions was our answer,” stated Bruce B. Harry, Jr., Director of Public Works with the City of Rancho Mirage.
The best solution for the City was a 80’ x 8’ Continental EXPRESS bridge with concrete decking. The pedestrian truss structure offered a number of advantages over other solutions including a quick turnaround time. This standardized truss system provided stamped drawings within three business days after receipt of an order and the bridge was ready for delivery in less than six weeks, significantly reducing construction time.
As promised, the structure was delivered to the site in just six weeks and installed in just half a day.
“The staff at Contech provided us with superior customer service, bridge drawings within three business days and delivered a quality pedestrian bridge six weeks later,” added Bruce B. Harry, Jr. “Thank you for a job well done.”
This project was part of the “Safe Routes to School National Partnership” program which is dedicated to “creating safer streets, improving communities and promoting physical activity for children and their families.” A ribbon cutting event was held in November 2011 and included a speech by the Mayor, in which he stated that the installation of this bridge would definitely provide the children with a safer route to school.
