The Piedmont-Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, was in need of a vehicular tunnel for traveling traffic beneath a new aircraft taxiway. The site had poor soils and a fast installation was necessary to shorten work schedules. Additionally, the tunnel had to be constructed without disrupting to the ongoing commercial operations of the active airport.

The Airport worked with Talbert and Bright Engineering and Planning Consultants to choose a structure that met their needs. They decided on a CON/SPAN® bridge system for the taxiway overpass because the large load-carrying capacity of the CON/SPAN arch was perfectly suited for the high live loads required for the airport.

The MurEbal precast concrete pedestal walls and wingwalls provided two distinct advantages. First, they provided the necessary clearance to allow for the two-lane highway underpass. Second, the precast concrete wall elements allowed for a fast installation.

Blythe Construction installed the 36’ span, 11’ rise structure quickly and economically. The set-inplace construction of the 251 long CON/SPAN helped reduce direct impact to travelers and provided Piedmont-Triad International Airport with a successful vehicular tunnel under taxiway solution.
