National Oilwell Varco (NOV), the project owner, is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and sale of equipment and components used in oil and gas drilling and production. During construction of NOV's Research and Development Technology Center, a stream crossing structure was needed at the entrance. Since this facility is located in a remote area with no access from surrounding roads, time was of the essence. NOV had originally selected a dual cell 8’ x 8’ reinforced concrete box culvert with cast-in-place headwalls and wingwalls as the solution, but it was later deemed too costly and too time consuming.
As a better alternative, a 15'-10" x 10'-8" MULTI-PLATE® was installed onsite in just two days. The plate structure was selected for its tremendous time and cost savings as well as the ease of delivery and construction. Due to the relatively small size of the plates, the product was able to be delivered with ease to this remote location and then assembled on-site.
Contech Engineered Solutions provided a turnkey solution by advancing from preliminary design to assembled structure in only 2 months. Contech performed preliminary analysis, final engineering of the structure and the slope collar, fabricated and assembled the plate, adding even more value for NOV. Furthermore, the versatility of the MULTI-PLATE product allowed for a 2:1 beveled end, eliminating the need for costly headwalls and wingwalls that would have been required with the reinforced concrete box culvert option. Instead, a small slope collar was cast in the field.
"Top marks for all," stated Aaron McGuire, Project Manager with Urban Construction Southwest, Inc., the contractor on the project. "Thanks to Contech for doing a great job and making it easy for us."
