Technical Description:
As part of a large commercial development project in southeastern Connecticut, two conventional concrete beam bridges were specified to span a wetland area. Working with consulting engineer Fuss & O’Neil, Contech and Manafort Brothers arrived at a more economical solution. Two prefabricated steel truss vehicular bridges were proposed and accepted in place of the concrete structures. These structures offered significant cost savings and more visual appeal.
“The team at Contech was a pleasure to work with” said Rob Lewandowski, Project Manager for Manafort. “They worked very hard to produce a design and bridge that saved the project owners time and money. Additionally, I believe the resulting weathering steel truss type bridge was an aesthetically attractive alternative”
The prefabricated structures allowed for the bridge phase of the project to be completed earlier than first anticipated. Manafort’s crew poured the abutments, assembled the bridges and installed the decks. The massive construction project included a national home improvement retailer, a franchise restaurant, a convenience store and strip mall space.
